Juha Olavi Honkaniemi
... is a postdoctoral researcher at BOKU starting from June 2017. His research interests are in the field of forest disturbances, disturbance modelling and risk management. At BOKU, he will continue with these research topics in the projects of "REFORCE" and "PROTECTED".
Dr. Honkaniemi has graduated from the University of Helsinki, Finland with M.Sc. (Agr. & For.) in 2011 from Forest ecology and management specializing in forest pathology. After that, he continued working as a researcher at the Natural Resources Institute Finland Luke and pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki. He defended his thesis "Integrating mechanistic disturbance models and stand dynamics of Norway spruce" in June 2017. The thesis focused on the three most important disturbance agents of Norway spruce in Europe Heterobasidion root rot, bark beetles and wind. In his thesis Dr. Honkaniemi developed mechanistic models to simulate these disturbances and their interactions integrating them into a decision support system for forest management.
