Harald Vacik is working on geographical information science & decision support systems for multipurpose forest management at the Department of Forest and Soil Sciences at the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna. For a period of almost 10 year he is involved in the development and application of criteria and indicators for evaluating sustainable forest management at forest management level and in national and international contexts. In addition to the development and application of multi-criteria decision making techniques the tools DSD and CONES have been developed. In the field of Conservation biology he is adopting population viability risk management (PVRM) approaches to evaluate conservation management strategies in order to maintain species at risk and to identify courses of action to improve the viability of populations. In the context of his research activities he is providing expert advice in the implementation of scientifically based practical applications of silvicultural Know How and multi-criteria decision making techniques in Europe and Asia.
