Variability of C budgets of pea and bean varieties originating from North or South Europe.
Within the EU project EUROLEGUME, carbon distribution, above- and belowground tissue respiration and photosynthesis of up to 40 varieties of peas, cowpeas and faba beans will be measured. Objective of the project is to determine if varieties of different European regions have different strategies in utilizing the assimilated carbon for root or shoot development and operation. The information will be used for future breeding approaches.
Ectomycorrhizal biodiversity in Fagus sylvatica/ Pinus sylvestris mixed stands.
From experimental sites in the Lehrforst roots of Fagus sylvatica and Pinus sylvestris will be collect and the ectomycorrhizal community determined based on morphological characteristics. Objective of the study is to determine the degree of overlap in the two communities.

Roots of Picea abies, Pinus cembra or Pinus mugo will be collected from trees growing at different elevations and the ectomycorrhizal community determined based on morphological characteristics.
Effects of heavy metals on the growth of ectomycorrhizal fungi.
Using in-vitro agar cultures of a number of ectomycorrhizal fungi, the effects of heavy metals on growth will be investigated.
Determination of hyphal biomass in Fagus sylvatica stands.
The hyphal biomass of ectomycorrhizas will be determined using in-growth bags at the Lehrforst experimental site. Biomass will be determined using markers such as ergosterole and chitin.
Development of mycorrhizal in-growth bags to determine ectoenzymes involved in C and nutrient cycling.
Mycorrhizal ectoenzymes from the extramatrical mycelium play an important role in C and nutrient cycling in forests. The project will develop in-growth bags with fillings such as cellulose and lignin to assess production of ectoenzymes.
Determination of hyphal biomass of understory Ericeous vegetation.
Ericeous vegetation of forests is believed to play a role in forest. Using in-growth bags and specific biochemical markers the hyphal biomass of Ericeous vegetation will be investigated.
A comparison of fine root distribution of a range of tree species growing in a common garden experiment.
The fine root biomass of a number of tree species in a common garden will be investigated using root coring.
Determination of Ca uptake by declining Picea abies stands in Southern Norway.
Using wood samples collected from decline and healthy tree stands the uptake of Ca will be investigated using 86/86Sr in tree rings.
Root dynamics of Picea abies under experimental summer drought and bark beetle infestation.
Root dynamics will be investigated with a minirhizotron system. Biomass and root morphology will be determined by soil sampling.
Influence of competition and abiotic stress on root traits.
Root braches of tree seedlings will be manipulated to grow either under intra, inter or competitor free environments. Stresses can be chosen according to interest e.g. drought, nutrient scarcity, high pH.
